Gwen Swennen

Gwen Swennen is professor in maxillo-facial and facial plastic surgery. He is fellowship director,  consultant maxillo-facial and facial plastic surgeon at the division of Maxillo-Facial surgery, General Hospital St John, Bruges, and coordinator of the Cleft & Craniofacial Centre Bruges.  Private practice in cosmetic facial surgery, Clinic Tilleghem, Bruges. He obtained his medical degree in 1995 at the University of Antwerp (UA) and his dental degree at the University of Brussels (ULB) in 1998. He was trained in cranio-maxillo-facial surgery in Hannover (Prof. J.-E. Hausamen and Prof. H. Schliephake) and plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery in Hannover and Brussels (Prof. A. De Mey). He obtained his certificate in “maxillo-facial surgery” in 2002 and in “plastic and aesthetic surgery” in 2005. He obtained his PhD degree (“Habilitation”) in 2004 at the Hannover Medical School and became associate professor. In 2009 he became the academic title “APL-Professor”. 

His interests are orthognatic surgery, cosmetic facial plastic surgery and congenital malformations. He has a special interest in three-dimensional virtual imaging and planning. He has been member of the Education Committee of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery (IAOMS) and section editor of the “Imaging Section” of the International Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery until 2017. Since 2017 he is member of the editorial board of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and councilor for Belgium of IAOMS. He published extensively in the scientific literature and presented on numerous occasions at both national and international congresses. He is editor of two books:  “Three-Dimensional Cephalometry. A Color Atlas and Manual” and “Three-Dimensional Virtual Planning of Orthognathic Surgery”
