Ceramic Dental Implant – An Alternative to Conventional Titanium Ones?

Recorded On: 05/05/2021

Overview: OMS is one of the quickest advancing specialty among all healthcare professions due to its rapid expansion in research in many different areas. The two most important area of development are digital and 3-D technology and the utilization and improvement in different bio-compatible materials. The use of Zirconia dental implant is the best example as a result of the important development between these two areas.

The use of Zirconia is no longer restricted only to the prosthetic parts of the dental implant therapy nowadays, but the fixation itself too. Being as the same group with titanium in the periodic table, zirconia has very similar chemical properties yet superior in its strength. It is as inert as titanium biologically due to the zirconia oxide layer, thus osseointegration also happens on it. Studies has shown that zirconia could be more beneficial to be used as an implant fixature when compare with the traditional titanium fixature in many different aspects, namely less plaque accumulation, less periodontal tissue loss , less inflammation, less bacteria count, better soft tissue adaptation and integration as well as more esthetic due to its color.

According to estimation, ceramic implant only shares around 1% of the global dental implant market. Would it be more and more popular in the future? The lecture will bring you through the basic science for ceramic implant, the clinical aspect, the long term stability of the implant and the peri-implant tissue as well as the indication of ceramic implant in day to day practice.

Learning Objectives:

• Basic Science of Zirconia

• Indication of Zirconia Implant

• Pros and Cons of Zirconia Implants
