Dr. Kolokythas joined the University of Rochester and EIOH from the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Dentistry, where she worked since 2009, most recently as an associate professor, program director, and director of research in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. After earning a dental degree at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece, she completed residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by two surgical fellowships in Head and Neck-Maxillofacial oncology and Reconstruction at the University of Maryland at Baltimore and the University of California at San Francisco. Immediately after the fellowship training Dr. kolokythas returned to the University of Illinois as full time faculty in the tenure track and within six years was promoted to the rank of Associate professor with tenure. During the tenure at UIC, she earned a U.S. Dental Degree and a Master of Science in Oral Science. Her primary research interest is in oral cancer specifically in early detection and diagnosis. Oral cancer and maxillofacial pathology is the primary focus of publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapter contributions, presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Kolokythas remains active in regional and national professional organizations, and serve on the editorial boards of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the official journal of the OMFS specialty, the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Research and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Cases. In 2008 she was awarded the Faculty Education Development Award (FEDA) from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Foundation. In 2014 she received the Faculty Research Award and the DuBrul Faculty Achievement Award at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Dentistry, and was named one of the Top 25 Women in Dentistry in Dental Products Report. The focus of her clinical practice is in oral head and neck cancer, maxillofacial pathology and reconstruction. She was named Department Chair and Program Director of the University of Rochester-EIOH Advanced Education OMFS Residency Training Program in October of 2015. Dr. Kolokythas as also conducted to the American College of Surgeons in 2015. She is currently a matriculating student in the Master’s Program in Health Professions Education at the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester. She was nominated and accepted into the 2018-2019 ELAM fellowship program.
Dr. Kolokythas is married with twin boys and a yorkie dog named Cooper.
