Craniofacial Distraction – Concepts, Controversies, Complications, Conclusions 

Osteogenic distraction is a well-established technique in the treatment of congenital and acquired craniofacial deformities. Its classic indications have been enhanced with the development of computer-assisted surgery and the design of customized devices. Despite its great therapeutic possibilities , we must know its possible limitations and complications to define its indications correctly.

Learning Objectives:

- Review basic concepts and indications of osteogenic distraction

- Demonstrate the utility of virtual planning and custom devices in craniofacial osteogenic distraction

 -Critically review the current indications of the osteogenic distraction technique and its future evolution

Dr. Richard Burton is a Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Academic Practice at the University of Iowa. He is a retired Navy Captain who was Chair at the National Naval Medical Center and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC and Specialty Advisor to the Surgeon General. He has served as an Examiner, Director and President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has chaired multiple committees for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
