Blood Products for Oral and Maxillofacial Regeneration

Presented by: Tara Aghaloo, DDS, MD, PhD

Description:

Bone healing and regeneration, especially in the oral and maxillofacial region, poses significant challenges for the practicing clinician. Although autogenous bone is the gold standard for regenerative procedures, major complications, limited availability, and technical sensitivity cause clinicians to search for alternative strategies and techniques to improve outcomes. With the popularity of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, stem cells, growth factors, and scaffolds are now being discussed between surgeons and patients. However, regulatory limitations, high costs, and complex medical histories often prevent surgeons from offering the latest regenerative techniques to all patients. In this case, how do oral and maxillofacial surgeons improve hard and soft tissue grafting outcomes? The use of blood products, specifically platelet concentrates, have become extremely popular for regenerative procedures. Whether used to improve vascularity, aid in soft tissue healing, or congeal particulate bone graft material together, autologous blood products are in a surgeon’s daily armamentarium. This presentation will discuss the use of autologous blood products in oral and maxillofacial regeneration, including indications, techniques, complications, and outcomes.

    • Learning Objectives:
      • Discuss the use of autologous blood products in oral and maxillofacial regeneration.
      • Review the benefits and pitfalls of using autologous blood products.
      • Explore the science behind these innovative products.

Session 2 | 8:45-9:30am CDT

Management of Complex Cases in the Aesthetic Region

Presented by: Jorge Caubet BiaynaGJJ, MD, PhD, FEBOMS

Description

It is well known that rehabilitating complex cases in the aesthetic region with implants is challenging. Proper analysis of the soft tissue, hard tissue, the sequence between grafting and implantation, as well as patient selection, are all crucial factors.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the management of soft tissue in the aesthetic region.
  • Explore when and how to perform bone grafting.
  • Understand the correct sequence for implant placement.

Tara Aghaloo, DDS, MD, PhD

Dr. Tara Aghaloo is a Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UCLA School of Dentistry. She completed her dental training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency, MD, and PhD in Oral Biology at UCLA. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and is a board examiner for the specialty. She has a very active clinical practice focusing on bone and soft tissue regeneration, dental implant surgery, and osteonecrosis of the jaws. She is also active in professional organizations where she is the Associate Editor for the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Past-President of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO), and a member of several American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) committees.

Jorge Caubet Biayna GJJ, MD, PhD, FEBOMS

Jorge Caubet Biayna completed his medical studies at the Autonoma University of Barcelona. After finishing his medical degree, he passed the MIR exam to pursue specialized training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He obtained his PhD at the Autonoma University of Barcelona, graduating with the distinction of "summa cum laude." Dr. Caubet specialized in clinical practice focusing on implantology and bone regeneration in Palma de Mallorca, where he works exclusively as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, dedicated to implantology and bone regeneration. He is also a Visiting professor in the Master's program in Implants and Periodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Seville and Fellow of the European Board on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

G. E. Ghali, DDS, MD, FACS, FRCS (Ed) (Moderator)

Dr. Ghali has lived and practiced in Shreveport, Louisiana since 1993.  Dr. Ghali’s practice spans the full scope of craniomaxillofacial surgery. His professional interest lies in the treatment of pediatric craniofacial deformities including craniosynostosis, cleft lip and palate, and dentofacial deformities. However, his surgical and teaching interests also include cosmetic surgery, head and neck oncology, and maxillofacial trauma. Dr. Ghali served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dean of LSU School of Medicine), and Chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center. Dr. Ghali has continued to serve in leadership positions in national and international organizations such as the ACS, AAOMS, ABOMS, and IAOMS.
