Jaw defects may result from maxillofacial trauma, head and neck infections, jaw pathology, or congenital craniomaxillofacial defects. These resultant jaw defects often involve more than just the bone, since teeth, nerves, mucosa, skin, and muscles can all be lost either from the disease or the treatment. At UIC our approach to jaw reconstruction is more than just replacement of bony substructure of the maxilla or mandible. In our Center of Excellence at UIC, we attempt to replace as many of these missing structures at the same time of the ablation and reconstruction to attempt to achieve immediate “full functional jaw reconstruction.
1. The participants will learn about the different types of bony and soft tissue reconstruction options and understand the UIC reconstruction philosophy.
2. The participants will learn about nerve reconstruction including why allogenic nerves are preferred and the benefits of immediate reconstruction.
3. The participants will learn the indications and contraindications to immediate dental reconstruction.
