Leadership Development in Healthcare: What Works, How and Why-- from Around the World

Recorded On: 05/08/2018

This webinar will consider a series of case studies of successful leadership development in a wide range of health care settings - domiciliary nursing in Japan, hospital expansion in New Zealand, mergers of health facilities in Canada, career development in the US military medical services, community engagement in primary services for indigenous people in Australia, personalised medical insurance in South Africa, improving resilience of hard-pressed medical staff in southern California, and so on. Dawing on these case studies and a literature review of evaluation studies, we will identify 6 principles for ‘what makes for successful leadership development in health services’ (from a report published by the UK NHS Leadership Academy and KPMG). In this webinar I will present some of the cases, the overall findings, and the implications for clinicians and health managers.

 Learning Objectives:

  • To appreciate a range of options in leadership development as practised in health settings around the world
  • To identify the criteria for successful leadership development
  • To recognise the factors in your organisation that indicate which approach to take
  • To understand what counts as leadership and how it can be encouraged, improved or tempered
