Join us for the first webinar in our new series, How We Do It - From Global Centers of Excellence, where leading clinicians from top medical centers share their expertise on innovative techniques. This session will focus on advanced Jaw Reconstruction strategies, featuring Dr. Michael Miloro and Dr. Nicholas Callahan from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).
Jaw defects may result from maxillofacial trauma, head and neck infections, jaw pathology, or congenital craniomaxillofacial defects. These resultant jaw defects often involve more than just the bone, since teeth, nerves, mucosa, skin, and muscles can all be lost either from the disease or the treatment. At UIC our approach to jaw reconstruction is more than just replacement of bony substructure of the maxilla or mandible. In our Center of Excellence at UIC, we attempt to replace as many of these missing structures at the same time of the ablation and reconstruction to attempt to achieve immediate “full functional jaw reconstruction.
1. The participants will learn about the different types of bony and soft tissue reconstruction options and understand the UIC reconstruction philosophy.
2. The participants will learn about nerve reconstruction including why allogenic nerves are preferred and the benefits of immediate reconstruction.
3. The participants will learn the indications and contraindications to immediate dental reconstruction.

Session 1 | 8-8:45am
Blood Products for Oral and Maxillofacial Regeneration
Presented by: Tara Aghaloo, DDS, MD, PhD
Description:
Bone healing and regeneration, especially in the oral and maxillofacial region, poses significant challenges for the practicing clinician. Although autogenous bone is the gold standard for regenerative procedures, major complications, limited availability, and technical sensitivity cause clinicians to search for alternative strategies and techniques to improve outcomes. With the popularity of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, stem cells, growth factors, and scaffolds are now being discussed between surgeons and patients. However, regulatory limitations, high costs, and complex medical histories often prevent surgeons from offering the latest regenerative techniques to all patients. In this case, how do oral and maxillofacial surgeons improve hard and soft tissue grafting outcomes? The use of blood products, specifically platelet concentrates, have become extremely popular for regenerative procedures. Whether used to improve vascularity, aid in soft tissue healing, or congeal particulate bone graft material together, autologous blood products are in a surgeon’s daily armamentarium. This presentation will discuss the use of autologous blood products in oral and maxillofacial regeneration, including indications, techniques, complications, and outcomes.
- Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the use of autologous blood products in oral and maxillofacial regeneration.
- Review the benefits and pitfalls of using autologous blood products.
- Explore the science behind these innovative products.

- Review the management of soft tissue in the aesthetic region.
- Explore when and how to perform bone grafting.
- Understand the correct sequence for implant placement.

Currently he is he senior physician and deputy head of the department for Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at university hospital Düsseldorf. His main points of efforts in research are the computer assisted development of resorbable patient individual implants made of new alloys. Also, the quality of life of cancer patients and the implementation of workflows for intraoperative 3D mapping within midface and cranium base tumour surgeries are valuable research fields. Dr. Rana serves as the Education Officer for the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS).
